Pakistan National PolioPlus Committee,
Rotary International:

Polio is crippling disease which has no cure but can be prevented with polio vaccine. Today, polio is endemic to just two countries in the world; Pakistan, Afghanistan. The goal of Pakistan National PolioPlus Committee is aimed to stop transmission of the polio virus in Pakistan.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) which was formed in 1988 with polio partners the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Rotary International to eradicate polio worldwide. In recent years, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is an equal partner, contributing to the cause of polio eradication

Intensified Polio Eradication Activity in Pakistan

Poliomyelitis or polio is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five years. Most know it as poliovirus. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. The Types of virus designated as 1, 2 and 3, may cause polio. Currently only type 1 appears to be circulating. Type 2 was last reported in 1999 and type 3 was last reported in 2012. Humans are the only reservoir of poliovirus. The virus is transmitted person-to-person through fecal-oral and oral-oral routes, or less frequently by water and milk. It multiplies in the intestine and spreads to the central nervous system, causing paralysis.
Although the importance of a coordinated international response is recognized, there are challenges to stopping the spread of polio and achieving a polio-free world. One important issue is how to direct the limited resources within the polio endemic countries.

Rotary’s primary goal for advocacy is to identify and address alliance opportunities, increase visibility, offer compelling evidence, boost political will and bring in new resources in support of polio eradication programmatic goals. The aim is “teamwork” with polio partners to achieve their goals by:

  • Develop manage, convene, and coordinate partnerships with donors, polio partners, advocacy organizations, and opinion leaders to promote foundation priorities
  • Meet with the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan, as well as Provincial Governors, Chief Ministers, Commissioners and parliamentarians. Rotarians in their respective districts hold health camps, visit schools and disseminate information through fliers.
